📚 How the ITU Rain Zone Tool Works

What does this tool do?

Rain acts like a wall for high-frequency radio signals. This tool tells you how much signal you’ll lose to rain at your location and frequency — critical for links above 6 GHz.

What is an ITU Rain Zone?

The ITU divides the world into 15 zones (A–Q) based on local rainfall intensity. Florida is Zone N (95 mm/hr), the UK is typically Zone E (22 mm/hr), the Amazon is Zone P (145 mm/hr). The zone determines the worst-case rainfall rate used for link budget planning.

When does rain matter?

  • Below 6 GHz: negligible (<0.1 dB/km even in Florida)
  • 11–18 GHz: moderate — include in budget
  • 23–38 GHz: significant — often the limiting factor
  • 60–80 GHz: severe — limits link distance in tropical zones
💡 Rule: Below 6 GHz, ignore rain. Above 11 GHz, always run a rain budget. Above 23 GHz, rain usually sets your maximum link distance.
